Recipe: Red Velvet Cupcakes



For the cupcakes:

  • 1 ⅔ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 3 eggs at room temperature
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • Red food colouring

For the cream cheese frosting

  • 120 unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 ½ icing sugar, sifted
  • 200 gr cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla powder
  • Pinch of salt


For the cupcakes:

  1. Preheat the oven at 180 degree Celsius. Place cupcake paper in a cupcake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together including the sugar. Give it a whisk.
  3. In another bowl, mix well the wet ingredients. 
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mix well.
  5. Add the red food colouring until you reach the desired colour.
  6. Place the batter into the cupcake papers.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

For the cream cheese frosting:

  1. In a bowl, beat the butter until soft. Pour icing sugar ¼ cup at a time into the bowl. Mix well in between.
  2. Add cream cheese, vanilla powder and salt. Mix well.
  3. Place the mixture into a piping bag and shape on top of cupcakes as you like.
